Homeopathic Aggravation Explained
What is a Homeopathic Aggravation? It's when you take a remedy and your symptoms feel worse than they were before.
The intensity of the pain is more acutely felt. This is a controversial subject in the Homeopathic community. Some homeopaths believe that an aggravation is necessary for cure, others believe that it weakens patients. I believe that as long as we are following Herings Law of Cure then we are on the right track. James Tyler Kent a well known homeopath gives us guidelines for analyzing the effectiveness of our remedies.

2.) If the aggravation is long, with a slow improvement, all will be well if the remedy is not too soon repeated.
3.) If the aggravation is short and violent, the best results will follow.
4.) If we have an immediate amelioration, followed soon by an aggravation, it is a failure, the case may be incurable, or the correct remedy has not been selected.
5.) If a full time amelioration of the symptoms occurs without any increase in the patient's strength, he will prove too weak for a restoration of health.
6.) If the patient develops symptoms of the remedy given without any improvement in the disease symptoms, the case is a hard one to treat, even for an experienced homeopath.
7.) If the old symptoms appear with the aggravation, you may wait; you need study no more; you have the remedy.
Hahnemann points out in his writings that there are two types of aggravation, the similar aggravation and the dissimilar aggravation. A similar aggravation is an increase of the symptoms the individual is experiencing or the appearance of old diseases. This is a sign of the correct remedy but too strong of a dose. It is best to wait out this reaction if it is not dangerous or extremely uncomfortable.
If a second dose is needed it will have to be adjusted in the downward direction. This means less succussions, more water in the solution, the use of more dilution glasses, a lower potency, a smaller amount such as 1/2 a teaspoon, etc. These are all methods of adjusting the dose.
A dissimilar aggravation is the appearance of new symptoms which the client has never experienced before or do not relate to the disease being suffered. They are medicinal symptoms produced by the remedy that are not homoeopathic to the condition of the individual who took the remedy. This is a sign of the wrong remedy.
